Planning a UK Family Day Out

A few minutes of planning before you leave saves a lot of frustration on the day — here's what's worth checking first.

Book ahead where you can

Many attractions — especially theme parks, zoos and anything with timed entry — sell tickets cheaper online in advance than on the door, and some require pre-booking entirely at busy times. Check the attraction's own website before you travel, not a third-party reseller.

Membership schemes can pay for themselves fast

If you visit castles, stately homes or gardens more than a couple of times a year, an English Heritage or National Trust membership often costs less than paying individual entry fees for a family more than twice. Many of our castle listings are run by one of these two organisations — worth checking before you buy a standard ticket.

Have a wet-weather plan

UK weather changes fast. If your main plan is outdoors — a wildlife park or a country estate — it's worth knowing the nearest museum or other indoor attraction in case you need to switch plans partway through the day.

Mix paid days with free ones

Not every day out needs a ticket. Our free attractions list covers nature reserves, some museums and country parks that don't charge for entry — good for spreading the cost across a longer trip or school holiday.
