Ely lies in the heart of the fenland, fifteen miles north of Cambridge. The City is dominated by the ancient Cathedral, the ‘Ship of the Fens’ which has sailed the fen skyline for over 10 centuries. What is so pleasing about Ely is the way that the heritage, magnificent architecture and sense of history blends with the bustle of the busy shopping area and riverside, to make a modern City which is a delight to visit.
Enjoy walking along the side of the Great River Ouse following the Quai D’Orsay, named after the twinning of East Cambridgeshire with the town of Orsay in France in 1981. The boathouses on the opposite side of the bank belong to the Kings School and Cambridge University, who practice along this stretch of the river every year before the famous Cambridge & Oxford Boat Race.
