Carmarthenshire
Carmarthenshire is one of the largest areas in Wales and is located in the South. Carmarthenshire is steeped in history and legacy, with an array of spectacular Welsh and Norman castles dotted around the region, just ripe for exploration. Roman remains at Carmarthen and the Gold Mines at Pumpsaint offer National Trust attractions with underground tours and panning for gold, both giving detailed insights into ancient Carmarthenshire life.
The most famous of the castles in the region is that of Laugharne, formed as part of a pattern of castles by the Norman's to provide fortifications giving protection at river crossings on the coastal route into South Wales.
For the visitor, a wonderful voyage of discovery can be had at The National Botanical Garden of Wales, located in Llanarthne where a unique garden once stood. The Tywi Valley held a secret in the heart of its beautiful landscape for centuries. A grand 18th century garden had almost been ruined and erased from history. The Middleton Estate had once been meticulously maintained but it had become over-run with ivy and in disrepair. Middleton, the National Botanic Garden of Wales is the resurrection of this piece of natural history and has been open since May 2000. This incredible garden has superb, modern resources specially designed to help educate this generation in how to establish a more sustainable future for the natural kingdom. A visit to the Garden provides the opportunity to find out more about the history, sights, sounds and scents of this spectacular re-interpretation of the historical garden, blending the breathtaking design of Norman Foster's Great Glasshouse with the careful restoration of the historic double walled garden.
